Electricity and Gas Comparison in these States

Our energy comparison service is only available in states that have a deregulated energy market. Each energy provider can only supply energy to some regions, therefore the number of energy providers that are compared for you differs depending on where you live. In the rest of Australia, you are only able to buy energy from one provider in your region.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have decided to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new energy provider allows you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to cancel the process and remain with your old energy provider.
No, definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). That distributor will continue to supply the energy to your house even if you change over to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from a distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, your energy supply won't be interrupted because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the switchover will not take place until after your current provider has issued you your final bill, and they cannot do that until after your next meter reading. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will notify the current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual change to your new provider won't happen straight away, because the current provider will need to do a meter reading one final time. and then issue you their final bill. The new provider will start charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. However, we will receive a commission from the new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips for using less energy and lower your bills

Here are some easy to implement ways for reducing how much you spend on energy bills

  • Minimise draughts. Prevent hot or cold air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors or around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Wear warmer clothing, instead of turning on the heater (warm socks, jumper, beanie, booties).
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Use the clothes dryer less often. Instead, dry your clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Reduce your use of lights by making use of the available natural light. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening let the house cool down, and closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Close doors to rooms that aren't in use, so that you just heat or cool a smaller space.
