How Hydropower WorksHydropower generates electricity from the force of falling water. Similar to wind energy, the pressure from the water turns a turbine, which converts kinetic energy into electricity.
The greatest advantage behind hydropower is that, unlike wind and solar, it is not dependent on weather conditions. Instead, hydropower can be produced in hydropower plants 24/7, all year round.
Until recently, hydropower was Australia’s main contributor of renewable energy. In the year 2000, hydropower contributed to about 95% of our renewable energy whilst today its contribution is just 31%.
How Solar Power WorksSolar power works by converting the sun’s energy into electricity through a process known as the photovoltaic effect.
This energy is captured through solar panels. However, this can prove difficult at times of the day when there is little sunlight or none at all.
About 29% of Australia’s renewable electricity is sourced from solar power.
